Which large North American company was rated most highly by its employees this year?

That would be consulting firm Bain & Co., based on Glassdoor’s just-announced 11th annual Employees’ Choice Awards for Best Places to Work in 2019. The awards are based on anonymous Glassdoor reviews by employees, who provide anonymous feedback about their job, work environment and employer.

Bain & Co. (which has a 4.6 rating out of a possible 5) was followed on this year’s list by Zoom Video Communications, In-N-Out Burger, Procore Technologies and Boston Consulting Group (see the full list below). This year’s category includes the 100 Best Places to Work in the U.S. (employers with 1,000 or more employees) and the 50 Best Small and Medium Companies to Work For (employers with fewer than 1,000 employees). Winners are ranked based on their overall rating achieved during the past year.

Bain & Co. is appearing at No. 1 on the list for the fourth time—previously, it was No. 1 on the Best Places to Work list in 2017, 2014 and 2012, making it the only employer to nab the top spot four times since Glassdoor debuted the awards in 2008. Along with Bain & Co., Google (No. 8 this year, with a 4.4 rating) and Apple (No. 71, 4.3 rating) are the only three employers to make the list every year. The average Glassdoor company rating is 3.4, the company says.

The 2019 Best Places to Work list for the U.S includes 31 newcomers, including Compass (No. 32, 4.4 rating), Omni Hotels (No. 72, 4.3 rating), Phoenix Children’s Hospital (No. 83, 4.2 rating) and HP Inc. (No. 87, 4.2 rating). The list for the 50 Best Small and Medium Companies to Work For include research and investing company Heap Inc. (No. 1 with a 4.9 rating), followed by Horizon Innovations at No. 2 (4.9).

German software company SAP is the only company to appear on the lists for all five countries (the U.S., Canada, U.K., France and Germany).

Glassdoor determines the winners for its Best Places to Work lists via a “proprietary awards algorithm.” Each employer’s rating is based on the quantity, quality and consistency of Glassdoor-approved company reviews submitted by U.S.-based employees between Oct. 23 of last year and Oct. 21, 2018, the company says. To be considered for the large employers list, employers must have received at least 75 ratings during the eligibility period and small and medium employers must have received at least 30 ratings, respectively, for eight workplace attributes that include overall company rating, career opportunities, compensation and benefits, work/life balance and senior management.
